SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY: PHILIP ALEXIUS DE LÁSZLÓ, 1869-1937

Primary sources

S.B.: The Artist’s Sitters’ Book, in two volumes: used by de László both as a studio visitors’ book and as a sitters’ book. The first signature, in 1899, was of the Emperor Franz Joseph, King of Hungary, who signed in the Royal Palace in Budapest, and the last the Duke of Connaught. De László left these books to the British Museum on his death. They were transferred to the British Library, where they now remain in the Department of Manuscripts: Document Numbers: 45. 095 and 45. 096. Translation made by Dr. Edward W. Hanson of the Massachusetts Historical Society, completed c.1998, and updated with new information from records compiled in the catalogue raisonné office.

NPG Album: The National Portrait Gallery (London) albums: de László made an unique record of his work (but not complete or perfectly chronological) which was deposited with the National Portrait Gallery, London after his death. There are 19 clothbound albums with photographs pasted in and the name of each sitter written (mostly by the artist) on each page. The majority of the photographs are by Paul Laib. There is no printed word at all in these volumes.Studio Inventory: Gregory Rowcliffe & Co. Will Trust, Inventory of Portraits, Pictures, Studies, Sketches, Drawings etc. by Philip Alexius László de Lombos, M.V.O. etc, London, 1938. After the artist’s death his solicitors Gregory Rowcliffe & Co. went to great lengths to record some 1255 of the paintings and drawings that remained in the artist’s studio and home. As far as it is known five books, typed and copied with original thumbnail photographs, were made, one for each of the sons of the artist.
